Welcome to Lake District Grandfather Clocks

This website specialises in Grandfather or Longcase clocks from the English Lake District, Cumbria and the surrounding area. This area included the old counties of Westmorland, Cumberland and Lancashire.

The Lake District even though being a large rural area had a great many excellent clockmakers producing some very fine clocks over a span of three hundred years.

Most towns and even villages would have had a clockmaker, makers such as Taylor of Whitehaven, Barwise of Cockermouth, The Burton and Newby families of Kendal, Porthouse of Penrith, Philipson and Bellman of Ulverston, Jonas Barber of Winster.

The towns of Whitehaven and Lancaster were large ports in the 18th century bringing in a variety of hardwoods and exporting fine clocks to the rich colonies. A home market from Country estates to Yeoman houses and farmers cottages resulted in a diverse range of grandfather clocks from simple 30hour oak cased to grander Mahogany cased 8 day with moon and tidal dials.

Gillows of Lancaster produced a number of clock cases and also tradesmen who went onto making cases for local clock makers.
